"What you need to know, and why you need to know it."
Welcome to A Soldiers War! This site was developed and coded by TheLastSuperman who just happens to know many things web-related such as development. The site is powered by a lightweight custom-built system that dynamically pulls and displays YouTube videos from the @asoldierswar channel using the public RSS feed provided by YouTube.
Automatic Video Updates
Every time a new video is uploaded to the YouTube channel, it gets published to the channel's RSS feed. My system reads this feed and checks if the video is already stored locally in a cache file. If the video is new, it's automatically added to the list.
Caching for Speed
To avoid hitting YouTube's feed limits and to keep the site running fast, all video data is cached in a local JSON file. That file contains the video titles, thumbnails, YouTube video IDs, and a custom order number used to display them in the correct sequence (newest to oldest).
Display Logic
Videos and Screenshots are displayed in a responsive grid using JavaScript. By default, the first 12-15 videos and screenshots depending on the page you're on are shown, and users can click the Load More button to reveal additional videos and screenshots in batches.
Visual Effects
A background ember particle animation built using HTML5 canvas and JavaScript adds ambiance to the site, evoking a gritty tactical vibe fitting the Call of Duty theme.
Built With
HTML & CSS - for layout and design, PHP - for fetching the YouTube feed and caching it, and JavaScript - for interactivity and dynamic loading. No database is used. The site runs completely off static and cached files to maximize speed and simplicity.
